Difference Between Maki and Sashimi

When people think of Sushi, the term “raw fish” gets used a lot. If this is your conception of Sushi, you are probably thinking of sashimi. Sashimi is a Japanese word for “pierced body” and it is raw fish that is served without rice. If it were to be served with rice, then it would be called sushi.

Sushi got its start sometime in the 8th Century in Southeast Asia. It eventually spread to Japan and became an important part of Japanese culture. This original type of sushi is now known as narezushi, which means fermented sushi. That is because this kind of sushi was fish that was salted and wrapped in fermented rice. The fermentation of the rice was designed to keep the fish from spoiling.
Originally, only the fish was eaten and the rice was discarded. The fish preserved in the fermented rice was an important source of protein in Japanese culture. However, the Japanese preferred to eat fish with rice. During the Muromachi period, a type of sushi called namanare became popular in Japanese culture. With this new dish the rice was no longer a form of preservation, but a part of the plate itself.
Later, in the Edo period, another type of sushi was created. Haya-zushi was a kind of sushi that was created in a way that the fish and rice could be eaten together. This dish was unique to the Japanese culture and did not involve using the rice for fermentation. This type mixed rice with vinegar and added fish, vegetables, and other food items. This is one of the most popular types of sushi today.
